Our mission is to work for just immigration policies and practices that respect human rights and the dignity of immigrants through education, services, and advocacy. To help accomplish our mission, LBIRC has run ESL classes since 2008 in North Long Beach with the help of staff and community volunteers. In cooperation with Downtown Associated Youth Services (DAYS), LBIRC has been running an ESL class out of First Congregational Church since 2014.
Currently, LBIRC has three ESL class locations: First Congregational Church, St. Athanasius Church, and Cabrillo High School.
Downtown Long Beach: Tuesdays and Thursdays Mornings
North Long Beach: Tuesday and Thursday Evenings
Cabrillo High School: Friday mornings.
Registration: We have two registration periods throughout the year. To register for the Spring Semester, students should register in January. To attend the fall semester in September, students should register in August. Please follow us on social media to know exact dates of registration.
To serve best our ESL learners, it is important to have motivated volunteers to assist our ESL coordinator, Miles Haisley, in his teaching efforts. LBIRC hopes there are First Church members who are willing to volunteer and positively affect the lives of LBIRC’s students. There are volunteer opportunities at each of the classroom locations, so if you are interested in volunteering, you are encouraged to communicate with Miles to learn about these opportunities.
LBIRC’s ESL coordinator has three years teaching experience; four years ESL tutoring and coordinating experience; and a master degree in Linguistics with a concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Miles will provide volunteers with training and support in their role within the classroom, and Miles would be glad to meet with interested volunteers before their commitment to the program. To register for class or to become a volunteer, email Miles Haisley at email@example.com.
